What to Expect
If you would like to get in touch, please click here. Leave me a message with your details and I will get back to you as soon as possible. We can arrange a brief phone conversation for me to understand what you are seeking counselling for. This should enable you to decide whether you would like to book an initial assessment appointment with me. These appointments (90 minutes) are longer than a regular counselling session (60 minutes) in order for me to develop a well-rounded understanding of your issues, your background, medical and family history, your coping profile and your hopes and goals. This is an opportunity for both of us to decide whether it would be beneficial to work together. The assessment enables us to delineate the parameters which will shape our work and clarify any aspects of therapy that are unclear.
If we decide to work together, we will then agree an ongoing appointment preferably at the same time, on the same day every week to create a pace to our work. Counselling is a collaborative process. My psychological knowledge and therapeutic skills combined with your understanding of your own experiences and insights will enable us to create a closely tailored approach to respond to your issues and needs.
Therapy can bring up painful emotions as we work with difficult past experiences or crippling fears. This can result in a temporary increase in distress. If this is your experience, we can discuss ways to support you through the initial stages to make this as manageable as possible.
At times, I may give you some materials to read or videos to watch in your own time. We may also agree on some homework tasks between sessions. Part of the therapy is about understanding how the mind works, developing better self-care and actively taking the therapy out of the therapy room and into your life.
We will also review our work together on a regular basis. Your feedback is critical to keeping our work aligned with what you are looking for. I always welcome your thoughts, impressions and preferences.
